The weather, always good for someone

Singing in the rain at Cortijo El GuardaAs a Dutchman you never stop talking about the weather. In the elevator, at the bus stop and the coffemachine at work. Working in the hospitality business in Spain you are always torn apart between hoping for the rain for farmers (and country) and for the sun for our guests. A good combination to bring up the subject between good and bad weather again.

This week the latter prevailed: where in Northern Europe people were sweating their B**t with all time high temperatures, it was raining here every day with far too low temperatures.

So we have benefited this week as we have had more water in the embalses (lakes/reservoirs) that are at a low level after the drought  and heat of last summer and the dry-ish winter. The nearest embalse at Zahara is with its present level of 78% still quite a bit lower than its 10 years average of 87%. Although 11% difference may be doesn’t sounds that much, we are talking about 18.000 mln liters of water….

This morning I came across the long term weather forecast and it say that overall, a summer with near-normal temperatures and precipitation is expected across Spain and Portugal. While there will be heat, the summer will be cooler compared to last summer when we experienced 72 days with temperatures 32 C, or higher from June through August.

“Mild nights are expected across the Iberian Peninsula this summer, resulting in above-normal temperatures overall,” according local meteorologists. Following a wet pattern during the spring, conditions will turn drier in June with occasional light rainfall, especially in northern Portugal and northern Spain.

During the months of July and August, drier overall weather is expected with isolated thunderstorms. Most of these storms will occur in the higher terrain during the afternoon and evening hours. A few of the storms will drift into the lower elevations and will bring beneficial rainfall.

“The drought that has impacted parts of the Spain the past several years will plateau or even improve slightly in some areas”.

As off tomorrow it will be dry and sunny, probably till October……
